"And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." - Max Ehrmann

This quote is part of "Desiderata," a prose piece written in 1927 and later adorning the walls of thousands of college dormitories in the 1970's in verse form. It's worth a Google search if you are interested in the full text.

What is now considered a bit tired and inauthentic, Authenticity, Self-Assertiveness and Loving and Being True to Oneself are at its core (my interpretation). Experience teaches lessons to all of us with the passage of time. "Desiderata" suggests (again, to me) that the best is yet to come.

Will what we desire come to pass? Am I to be forever a freshman or have I graduated to being merely Sophomoric? At 71, am I still a bit too pretentious and juvenile? My whole little post today is in response to that one little sentence quoted in the opening.

Is the best yet to come or has the best already come and gone, if at all?

I don't know.

But I do know and do feel that living in Recovery allows the Possibility of the best of all possible worlds. Addiction allowed me not much of anything besides my Necessity to fulfill my Minimum Daily Requirement of Drugs, NO Satisfaction Guaranteed, Misery implicit. Addiction is Suffering for no purpose, Endless Discontent. Nothing Possible.

I will settle for Serenity, Clean and Sober over Dopey (redundant) Dopiness any day, every day, today.

"And whether or not it is clear" to me, "no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." No doubt (or PERHAPS, perhaps). I'll take Recovery any old day, any new day and for every tomorrow. Whether or not it's as it should, it's good, it's good. My Universe, Recovery, is good.
